Q: How many lessons will I need and how often?

A: Absolute beginners will need regular lessons once a week until the basic technique is in place. Regular checking is required by the teacher to ensure that the fundamentals are learnt correctly and that no errors or bad habits are creeping in. Problems acquired at this stage will inhibit later development and are harder to fix once ingrained. Interestingly pupils that have fortnightly lessons seem to develop at less than half the rate of those who have a weekly lesson.

Q: How long will it take me to learn?

A: How long is a piece of string? There are three main factors involved in this one.

1: Aptitude. 2: Application 3: Frequency of lessons.

Generally speaking though a complete beginner with average aptitude can be playing songs and improvising basic leads in around 6 months assuming they have weekly lessons and practice diligently.

Q: I don't have an instrument and would like to take a trial lesson to see if I'm going to enjoy it before I lash out on a guitar. Can you lend me one for a lesson.

A: Yes, no problem.

Q: I've been playing for ages but my playing hasn't progressed for years can you help me?

A: Yes, definitely. I help people in this position all the time. Usually it's a combination of technical problems (see the 1st question) and a lack of general musical knowledge. We can give your technique a complete M.O.T. and if need be an overhaul. From there we can look at wider musical issues such as theory, ear training and stylistic development.

Q: You seem more expensive that many other teachers. Why is that?

A: Firstly, I'm very good at what I do and have the whole process down to a fine art. This saves you time and effort. Secondly, Compared to something like driving lessons which require a relatively short period of training by the instructor they're really good value for money. Thirdly, yes there are loads of people offering cheaper lessons around Leeds but in all honesty many of them should still taking lessons themselves. Being able to play a Chilli Peppers song does not qualify you to teach. Unfortunately it is professionals like myself that usually clear up the mess they make.

Q: I want to learn to play like player "X" can you teach me?

A: Of course, but if your techique or level of musical knowledge aren't up to the job I'll be honest and let you know. We can get it fixed and move on to learning tht particular players style.

Q: I'm going to buy a guitar would come a help me choose one? I'm a bit nervous about it all.

A: If I've got time then by all means. I've done it in the past and no doubt I'll do it again. I don't charge for this but if you feel like it come to one of my gigs and buy me a pint.
