I want to buy an old italian violin but I am afraid that they will trick me. How do I know?

My father will give me $ 30,000 to buy the violin during my studies, but none of us is an expert in violin. I can play but I can not tell the difference between $ 10,000 and $ 30,000 violin. Help.
Thank you both.

Buy a roundtrip ticket to Cremona, and buy the instrument of one of the many shops that sell vintage violins violin made in this area. You can test them there and get one that gives you the best feeling.

You have to barter for the price, eg if they ask for $ 50,000, you tell them that you can spend up to $ 15,000, then pretend to leave the store. The guy will certainly remind you and make you an offer of $ 40,000, but you hold your ground until it enters your price range.

If you buy a violin of this quality in this price range, then you must be a student with an excellent teacher. Talk to your teacher about this issue, and ask if he / she will go with you to the dealer to look and play the instrument. If your teacher is not comfortable, ask him to recommend a specialist violin in your area who can go with you to review the instrument.

Once you decide to buy, have the dealer include a written agreement that you may have a violin valued by an independent expert within 60 or 90 or 180 days after the purchase, and if that expertise is not agree with how the dealer represented the instrument, you have the right to return the instrument for a full refund.

If the dealer is not willing to do, find a different dealer.

On an innovation spree

It’s tough not to get drawn to music when you have a pianist dad and a flautist mom. It was but natural for Mandhira De Saram to have a future in music. This Sri Lankan violinist learnt to play the violin when she was five. “I was enjoying every bit of it. And I had never imagined that I would have a career in it,” reveals the 26-year-old artiste, who we caught up with when she performed at Alliance Francaise de Bangalore on Friday.

“It is my first time in this city, and it’s quite exciting. I had heard lots about the huge music society in Bengaluru and how people are appreciative of different genres of music,” says Mandhira who graduated with first class honours from the University of Oxford with a high first in performance, and is now working as a freelance violinist in orchestras across the world.

Mandhira has founded Ligeti Quartet, a string quartet that aims at popularising 20th and 21st century music. This young artiste loves teaming up with contemporary composers and working on cutting edge music. “We work with various new materials, new sounds and device innovative ways of using an instrument. I keep imagining how a century later, people might look back at the work we are doing now with awe,” says Mandhira. “Some people find this kind of music fascinating, but some need to experience a lot more it before it finally grows on them,” she says.
