Violin players: How long did it take you to master the violin?

At age 8 or 9, I took violin lessons (college students experienced violinist, but a horrible teacher). I hated mainly because of the instructor and his teaching methods (He tried to teach me a level of 4 songs before teaching me the scale). Now, having learned to play the Bb clarinet fluently, I decided that I want him back. How long did it take to master and start producing music "reality" on the violin?

I'm glad you've decided to take the violin again! Knowing another instrument allows a ton to learn another. You already know that the scales are supposed to sound like when they are listening and have an idea what the dynamics, armor, and everything is fun stuff.

So you're way ahead of the game. With this knowledge, it should only take a few years (maybe two) to become, say, "control" on the violin. It took me three or so have fun with mine because I was really little when I started. But for most people it could be longer than that.

Then it starts and practice hard, you might get a good lot sooner than you think.

I learned to play the violin by ear starting around 33 years or more.

I've been playing the guitar, some mandolin, banjo and some, and has been regularly attending meetings of Old Time Music Jam with friends. So I had a repertoire of fiddle tunes in my head and I knew regurlarly and played with several good fiddlers.I would go to jam sessions and playing rhythm guitar (because I could do well without having to think too much), but I'd be watching and listening to Fiddler (s) like a hawk, watching to see how they used their bows to create a groove and rhythm to express the melody, and how they rated the melody. I bring a tape recorder and the air strip that I loved. Then at home between the jams, I listen to tapes, memorize melodies of violin music, set them to ear on the violin, then play with bands. If I had a question about a particular air, I could ask one of my friends violinist and they would be useful, but mostly I thought about these things by myself.

It took me probably about 4 or 5 years of self-learning before I got to the point where I'm confident enough to start putting my violin for Jam Sessions and thus playing a few tunes.

Now, after 17 years of violin, I mainly play the violin (and banjo) sessions Old Timey jam and play with a local bluegrass group. Although I still would not say that I completely "control" the violin, LOL.

Young violin master Benjamin Beilman manages to enjoy life

Like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Yehudi Menuhin, violinist Benjamin Beilman started playing seriously around age five, and began tackling concert repertoire soon after. That kind of devotion is rare, and can bring out the best and worst in stage parents.

“I really don’t think I was any kind of a prodigy,” Beilman says by cellphone from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

“I personally feel very lucky, because my parents wanted to make sure I had a normal childhood. I went to public school, played soccer, and was determined to enjoy the other parts of life. In any case, I think of child prodigies as people who had a lot more talent and stress than I did. For me, it was a much more gradual process, and one my parents and I thought carefully about. My hope, of course, was to have a career. I knew I loved doing this, and that I had something to say.”

Critics, juries, and audiences have agreed. The young, dark-haired fiddler has won several top awards in Quebec, Germany, and the U.S. More recently, he turned 21 and released his debut CD, an Analekta recording of the complete violin sonatas by Sergei Prokofiev. (Here, accompanied by pianist Arthur Rowe, he’ll play some Prokofiev, plus a Mozart sonata and something by Camille Saint-Saëns.)

Study reveals secret of Stradivari's varnishes

A case study reveals the varnish Stradivari

[Friend: 2009-12-07]

Stradivarius owes its strength to consume substances that were readily available to and generally informed by 18th century artists first, according to new EU-funded Arrival published in Angewandte Chemie Ecumenical folder Printing. The findings lay to rest theories to his large following that the author of hardened master mechanism or rare ingredients in its tranquil veneer."It was quite honestly a master of his expertise," commented the result in the father's letter-paper, Jean-Philippe Echard of the Music Museum in Paris, France. In this last look, a Franco-German collaboration with scientists and instrument makers intentionally five instruments (four violins and a viola d'amore, the name, some say, to block the Cupid blindfolded carved he wore often) made by the terrible man. The instruments are housed in the Museum of Music, have made a full stop 30."Although the five instruments were produced over three decades, varnishes are very nearly identical," said Dr. Echard. "Stradivari first applied a layer of oil similar to oil Euphemistic owned by painters from the same period, without fillers or pigments, to seal the wood. We did not find a mineral layer aromatic, some calling earlier suggested. The master violin-maker then applied a weight to the oil layer of tinted resin. The oldest instrumentality, the "dream model essay on" the violin, which dates back to 1692, n had not appeared to have pigment in the outer layer of varnish. However, the varnish on the "Sarasate violin, from 1724, contained Vermillion. The plunge also helped in the use of two other types of red pigment in the finishing of Stradivari: one who is as likely as not from the insect-based dye cochineal, and the other consisting of oxides iron. By using various pigments, Stradivari was able to provide a diversity of colors in its instruments, presentation of information for researchers. These pigments are usually hand-me-down by the artists of the day."We found that Stradivari employed bland and definitely close by components which have been frequently employed among craftsmen and artists of the 18th century," the game ends. "These findings are inherent to restore the rule of Antonio Stradivari documented: he may not have an obsession with unorthodox or" encrypted principle ', but it was an exceptionally skilled craftsman who has mastered the art of violin making, and in the wood finishing punctilious....
