Sax man Speight plays 'Bird With Strings'
Andrew Speight had been playing alto saxophone for a couple of years when, at age 12 1/2, he first listened to one of his father's Charlie Parker albums at their home in Sydney. The experience changed his life.
"I'd heard a lot of classical music, but this was like two levels somewhere out there," Speight, 43, says of Parker after three sets of straight-ahead jazz at the Dogpatch Saloon that included such tunes by the late alto saxophonist as "Now's the Time" and "Cool Blues." When he's in town, Speight has been co-hosting jam sessions with drummer Vince Lateano at the Dogpatch, a neighborhood bar at the eastern foot of Potrero Hill, every Sunday from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. for the past eight years.
"It had all the precision and beauty of Bach or Mozart," adds Speight, professor of jazz studies and music at San Francisco State since 2000. "It had a soulfulness that seemed to grab you. The blues in it and the way he delivered a phrase were cut from granite. It was so good. It was so perfect. Every phrase is like a complete slice of music."
