Marcie Honerkamp Takes Mosaic Beyond the Wall
Marcie Honerkamp spent much of her adult life painting and experimenting with different visual styles, but it was only after she attempted mosaic that her true calling was revealed.
“Discovering mosaics was the final piece of my puzzle,” Honerkamp, a mother of two, explains on her website. “Suddenly everything that I had been visualizing during my artistic life had come together.”
The 51-year-old East Hampton artist was no stranger to the process of putting colored shapes together to create bigger, more striking images. In her formative years, Honerkamp made paper collage. She created similar work with tiny pieces of dried paint while studying at Parsons in New York, and her first mosaics were frames for those paint collages.
Still, “It seemed so foreign to me,” Honerkamp said of creating mosaics, but she was ready to start something new, so she taught herself the craft.
Today Honerkamp has 11 years of experience making mosaics and she continues to push her work to new places. She has a massive body of two-dimensional mosaics in her portfolio, including portraits, still life, tabletops, frames, and installations, but Honerkamp is now taking her art into three dimensions.
