" The album is important because it explored the concept of modal playing, which is the definition of harmony with a wide mode rather than a chord progression. In essence, it was a return to melody that musicians were not required in describing the chord changes for the sake of harmony. In addition to being a break through album in jazz, he was extremely popular with jazz listeners not then and still to this day.

This is the one jazz tell of owned by people who don't listen to jazz, and with good reason. The band itself is extraordinary (proof of Miles Davis's masterful casting skills, if not of God's continuance), listing John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on saxophones, Bill Evans (or, on "Freddie Freeloader," Wynton Kelly) on piano, and the split rhythm unit of Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Coltrane's astringency on substance is counterpoised to Adderley's funky self on alto, with Davis moderating between them as Bill Evans conjures up a still lake of sound on which they pathway. Meanwhile, the rhythm partnership of Cobb and Chambers is prepared to click off time until eternity. It was the key recording of what became modal jazz, a music gratis of the fixed harmonies and forms of pop songs. In Davis's men's hands it was a weightless music, but one that refused to fade into the background. In recollection every note seems perfect, and each piece moves inexorably towards its destiny. --John Szwed

So What by.Miles Davis
From his epitome album Kind Of Blue
Chris Brown and R.Kelly: Mad Men, Monsters Ball
I remember being mad about "Mad At Miles," Pearl Cleage's brave and brilliant account of Miles Davis's brutalities towards women. I wish it was simple, that I was simply mad at Miles for whooping Cicely Tyson's behind, our Cicely our queen, no I was mad at the conflict and the confusion it caused me. You see, I had to contend with "Kind of Blue" and "Sketches of Spain." Miles made music of the Gods, not to mention he was the hippest, sharpest dressed, defiant, hypnotically striking, dangerously sexy man to ever put his mouth to metal. Miles was a giant, a Black mans hero, a genius and a monster. Now, I am mad again. Mad at Chris Brown. Chris Brown, the bright smiling young Black boy who when he danced, you dare not turn away. Happy Chris, who shined through all the sludge of thug glamour. Chris has that star thing and a sick work ethic. Chris Brown heir apparent to Michael Jackson, who couldn't perform at his memorial because the swollen, black and blue, face of Rihanna was
