Keith Jarrett Trio, Festival Hall - review
It may be sacrilegious to discuss the planet's pre-eminent piano trio in anything less than glowing terms but for much of last night's eagerly-awaited concert these accomplished gentlemen sounded leg-weary.
Superstars they certainly are but superstars in their sixties and seventies, on tour for almost 30 years and in the middle of a punishing European summer jazz-festival season. Their fabled taste and finesse is intact but energy is equally vital to a jazz performance - and Keith Jarrett , the sparkplug of the group, seemed short of it, especially in the first half.
Newcomers must have wondered what the fuss was about as he crouched at the keyboard, twisting into half-rising poses in search of inspiration from a funereal St Louis Blues, a listless reading of Dave Brubeck's In Your Own Sweet Way, and subdued versions of Clifford Brown's slow-medium blues, Sandu, and a minor Broadway ballad, What Now My Love.
His colleagues seemed equally distrait, not helped by a sound balance which muddied Gary Peacock bass-lines, boomed Jack DeJohnette's drums and left the piano oddly shimmery and underpowered.
Imitate, Assimilate, Innovate: Jack DeJohnette
. That record spawned the category known as merger and changed the characteristics of jazz, funk, and overwhelmed all at the same simultaneously. Jack D grooves crux red to take each issue and cheaply from one cell to another, adding passion and musicality that makes you ridiculous everything you sympathy that you knew how to save a soloist and a bad payer. He took that mark with his other big names he has registered in the years to - Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, John Scofield ... His grooves are untouchable. They are gross and they well-meaning Fathom and convincing quality. His solos are inspired and inspiring, and never repetitive. He never refers to lick or play the same one case to another. He has this cosmos know-how on its ways, but differs from most drummers, he is not his game on the technicality.

Taborn's Avenging Angel has legs They've also become very large, thanks to Cecil Taylor's pioneering (and controversial) edgy excursions in the 1960s, Keith Jarrett's climb-everymountain efforts (at all leading to rhapsodies and/or catharsis) starting in the 1970s and, more recently, |

Brad Mehldau knows where he's going, but finds freedom in the journey There's Keith Jarrett's unprecedented example, in which he improvises languidly through loosely composed songs, settling into hypnotic blues revelations from dated to time. He favours the emotive over the rigorous, and his greatest successes come in moments |
