Brown’s label didn’t want to record this album, so Brown put up the cash himself and licensed it to them afterwards – when they heard what amounts to one of the greatest performances in any genre. Brown and his Famous Flames are ablaze on the original eight-song version of the disc, which rockets through “I’ll Go Crazy,” “Try Me,” “Think,” “I Don’t Mind,” “Lost Someone,” the set-closing medley of “Please, Please, Please,” “You’ve Got the Power,” “I Found Someone,” “Why Do You Do Me,” “I Want You So Bad,” “I Love You, Yes I Do,” “Strange Things Happen” and “Bewildered,” to finish with “Night Train.” This was still two years away from Gibson legend Jimmy Nolen (who defined the chicken scratch rhythm sound on an ES-175 , an ES-5 Switchmaster and a Les Paul Gold Top with P-90s)) joining the band, and yet the drive and ferocity of the Flames paired with the intensity of Brown – who then lived up to his reputation as “the hardest working man in show business” – is undeniable to anybody who ain’t got a hole in their soul.
