AMERICA FOUNDER PEEK DIES Multi-instrumentalist-singer Dan Peek, one of the three founding members of soft-rockers, America, along with high school pals Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, died at 60, reports Billboard.
Peek was an integral member of America from 1970-1977 that were the band's most popular years when they scored big with such hits as the #1 smashes, "A Horse with No Name" and "Tin Man," as well as Top 10 standards, "Lonely People" and "Ventura Highway."
The Peek-era America notched three platinum albums, three gold albums and eight Top 40 singles.
Little is known about the circumstances of Peek's death other than a posting on his website, reading, "Dan went to Heaven on July 24." It is believed that he and his wife Catherine lived in the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean. His former bandmate, Dewey Bunnell said Peek was "semi-retired." In 1977, Peek renounced his rock star lifestyle that included recreational drug use, quit the band and embraced Christianity. A 1979, the title song of a solo album, "All Things Are Possible," hit #1 on the Contemporary Christian chart and was nominated for a Grammy.
