ALL the regulars at the Creole Room - a hip jazz club in the late ‘70s - knew Wendy Wickes.

A red-haired, twenty-something medical student, she would stand at the club’s door on the corner of George and O’Connell streets, North Adelaide, and ensure everyone paid their $2 entry.

A humble and vivacious young woman, she was also known to get feisty when patrons would try to sneak in by climbing a tree to an open window.

After Wendy died of cancer in October last year, aged 58, her partner of 32 years, Michael Strautmanis, set up the Dr Wendy Wickes Memoriam Jazz Scholarship through Jazz SA.

The scholarship winner will receive $5000 at a concert at the Space Theatre, on October 13. The concert will be held annually thereafter.

``The thing that kept bringing us and combined us together was jazz,’’ he says.

``That was the thread that was running throughout our relationship and that’s why I think it’s appropriate, in the end, to keep her name and jazz alive together.’‘
