When should a student switch from a closed hole Flute to an open holed Flute?
I played a little over four years. I practice about 45 minutes a day and I'm in the concert orchestra at school. I am currently a 22 Gemeinhardt flute SP hole closed, and I feal I am ready to open perforated. I have a good tone control and a good vibrato. What do you think? I also play the piccolo ... if that means anything to you ...
I hate to burst your bubble, but the transition to a open hole flute does not mean that you update really. Introducing open holes is just an option, not necessarily a requirement unless you plan to do a lot of music in which holes open would be necessary for the technical areas. However, the neat thing about open holes is that they offer more options for skill matters of intonation and alternative fingerings. I also like the vibrations that I feel under my fingers, but it's just a personal thing.
If you and your tutors (or at least your music director) feel that you're ready to upgrade, then I would start looking at the most advanced models. If you're super serious about your game, then I would leave with the Gemmy (keep it as a back up) and go with something like Altus lower end (like their Azumi flute ... Really nice) or Miyazawa. These are the type of instruments that will last you through college, or possibly beyond. Your teacher can help.
If you decide to take an open hole flute, you can use caps for them.However, I would recommend ditching the cap as soon as possible. When I switched to the flute an open-punched, I removed the plugs in the fingers that I have not had any problems with it right away. The more I struggled with sleep in a little longer, but I practiced without caps for at least part of my practice session each day. Part of my struggle is that I was switching from a flute with an offside line at the G-key. My finger slipped beast near the center of the button somewhat. However, within 2-3 weeks I was playing my flute, open holes without any form of cards and not put back in their car.
