PEPPERELL -- "I've been looking forward to this for 40 years," said Peter Smith, president of the Nissitissit River Land Trust. "This" being the back-to-nature makeover of a picturesque piece of riverside real estate at 52 Hollis St.
Purchased by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, the site where a thriving mill complex once stood will be a wildlife habitat and be open to the public.
"It's a long story," Smith said, dating back to 1957, when "Fish and Wildlife wanted to conduct a study of Massachusetts waterways" and enlisted the aid of local groups such as the NRLT to provide data. He reeled off the names of some folks involved in the study. Many of them were from Pepperell, he said, including several trust members.
The study showed that the Nissitissit was "one of the finest cold water rivers in western Massachusetts," said Fish and Wildlife Land Agent Anne Gagnon. "It is highly valued."
