I have a 1977 Precision bass Fender and in very good condition ... Is it worth anything?
Hi Rick:
Depends on the state, and wants it enough! Many times what we believe to be in "good condition" may not be the case. Only an experienced vintage dealer can make this assessment. Ive had some people over the years who thought they had the real deal, only to discover that what they thought they had turned to the correct, but with tons of mods and a hodge podge of elements which draws on the value drops considerably. They bought the wrong person, the search didn't, and was torn! 77 Low P are not going anywhere for about $ 800.00 to $ 2000.00.There was a year that brought more, but thats usually on guitars that have a factory finish custom or special order guitars at the location where the product is extremely low. It is American made, as it wasn't until the 1980s that Fender had done nothing abroad. Little tidbit of info ..... ALL WINGS, doesn't matter what model, have been produced exclusively in Japan in 1985-1987. Too bad you didn't have one in early to mid 60's P-Bass, ive seen keep them going in the area of 7500.00 and more!
Now ... to ensure that you have a 77, heres what you need to know.
Since 1976, the American made Fenders have serial numbers on the peghead. An "S" is the prefix 1970.
An S7 + 5 digits or S8 + 5 digits is what you seek. These serial numbers were produced on guitars in 1977 and 1978.
If your interested in selling the guitar, heres a link you might want to check.

A bow to Siegfried Meier for Twelfth Night album & Kittie!
Due Aug. 30 via eOne Music.By delightful coincidence, Seigfried’s name shows up in the credits for the Twelfth NIght album: Engineered and Mastered at Beach Road Studios, Goderich, Ontario, by Siegfried Meier.
Siggy, JBNBlog salutes you . . . not since George Martin’s days of toiling with Peter Sellers and The Beatles or Kevin Doyle’s work with Glenn Gould and KISS has a producer/engineer worked such diverse magicks. Beach Road Studios, you rawk.
Here’s the full festival media release with artistic director and Twelfth Night helmsperson Des McAnuff explaining the background . . . no mention of the Fender connection, but darn it if Ben Carlson, in addition to so much else, doesn’t play bass on the album. Wow.
Also good to see my NWLondon neighbours Rob and Karen Stone & The Grand’s Jim Neil in the credits.
If music be the food of love, rawk on, &c.
August 2, 2011… The songs of Twelfth Night, composed by Artistic Director Des McAnuff and Michael Roth, will play on thanks to a new CD being released by the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in August.
